A QUICK GUIDE TO LEARNING AEROBATICS |
|
The Decathlon is
a classic tail-wheel and aerobatic trainer and the type that I recommend.
It can easily accomplish all the basic aerobatic manoeuvres and is
suitable for the competition flying. If you don't have a
tail-wheel endorsement then you'll need to do this training at the same
time. I can understand that some people don't want to do a tail-wheel endorsement yet still want to do aerobatics. There are some good basic aerobatic trainers with a nose-wheel, for example, the new Alpha from NZ, Airtourer 115, Airtourer T-6, CT-4, Zlin 242 and Cessna Aerobat. The spinning endorsement is a prerequisite for an aerobatic endorsement. The Decathlon has classic spin characteristics and requires positive spin recovery actions. The standard aerobatic endorsement comprises five manoeuvres according to CASA - the loop, barrel roll, slow roll, roll off the top and the stall turn. CASA notes that an endorsement on these five manoeuvres permits you to then fly combination manoeuvres. From there it doesn't take long to master a simple sequence and get involved in competition flying. For some, it just provides an opportunity for an occasional Sunday afternoon loop and roll. Others may simple want to experience some aerobatics to improve general flying skills and confidence - the full aerobatic course is not required - a shorter, tailored version is available. |

Frequently Asked Questions Q1. How much does an aerobatic course cost? A - the flight training for the spinning endorsement and the basic aerobatic endorsement per CAO 40.0 takes about seven hours at the normal dual rate for the aircraft chosen - typically the Decathlon. The course includes all briefings at no additional cost. The recommended textbook is Aerobatics Principles and Practice. The Decathlon will require a tail-wheel endorsement at additional cost. Q2. How much does a tail-wheel endorsement cost? A - the standard dual rate for the Decathlon applies with briefings included at no additional cost. Depending on your experience and rate of learning the number of flying hours may vary - three to ten is typical. i.e. you may feel as if you are learning to fly an aeroplane all over again. Rich Stowell has more to say on this subject. |

| Caution - aerobatics is addictive. There are regular fly-aways and contests for those keen on aerobatics. | |
